Day Eleven: Home, Habits, and Healing
January 18, 2025
There’s nothing quite like waking up in your own bed. The comfort of familiar surroundings—your favorite pillow, the rhythm of your home—feels like a warm embrace after time away. Sure, every house has its quirks, the little things that may annoy a visitor, but they’re part of what makes it uniquely ours.
This morning, I was reminded of one of those quirks: our 14-year-old puppy. Yes, 14 years young, still full of love and personality, though his age shows in his midnight routines. At 1 a.m. and again at 4 a.m., he needed to go out. And while waking up at those hours isn’t ideal, his gratitude—the way he looks at me as if to say “thank you” with his soft eyes and wagging tail—makes it worth every bleary-eyed moment.
Later that the morning , Maria and I ventured out. Getting outside and walking does wonders for me, both physically and mentally. We stopped by a few local spots: the ReStore by Habitat for Humanity and some consignment furniture shops. These places are treasures of creativity and inspiration. We wandered through aisles of gently loved furniture and unique finds, brainstorming ideas for remodeling the basement. It felt good to plan, to dream, and to share that time together.
Today, I decided to push myself a little, and it felt purposeful. Exercise is important, and while I’m still pacing myself, moving my body makes me feel alive. Staying hydrated is part of the equation too—something Maria is always kindly reminding me of.
Speaking of Maria, she outdid herself in the kitchen again. Dinner was mustard green soup with pork ribs, a meal as comforting as it was nourishing. It’s those little acts of love, like cooking a favorite meal or keeping me on track with my health, that remind me how lucky I am to have her by my side.
The rest of the day was slower but intentional: organizing medications, updating my planner, and carving out moments to rest. It was also a chance to get ready for the week ahead, which includes some medical appointments that are key to staying on top of things.
Tomorrow is shaping up to be productive, too. I’ve got some Scouting work to catch up on, a good way to stay involved and keep my mind engaged.
To cap it all off? A little Mizzou basketball. Go Tigers!
Day 11 was a blend of small joys, meaningful progress, and thoughtful preparation. It’s a reminder that healing comes in many forms—through love, movement, connection, and the simple pleasures of home.
